Obamacare Mandate’s Crush Religious Liberty

Your Religious Liberty is Obamacare's First Casualty!

More than 2,500 Christian leaders have signed a letter opposing Obamcare’s anti-conscience mandate. The letter’s release adds to the most recent furor over the rule’s blatant violation of religious liberty and decries the mandate’s coercion of religious employers to subsidize abortion-inducing drugs, contraceptives, and sterilization regardless of moral or religious objections to such services.

The letter, sponsored by the Family Research Council, explains:

Our country was founded on certain freedoms, the first of which is the freedom of religion. The ability of a religious person to follow their conscience without fearing government intervention has long been a protected right for Americans. It is unfathomable to picture a country that would deny religious freedoms. The letter takes issue with the mandate’s offensively narrow religious exemption that affords a protection of religious liberty only to formal houses of worship—excluding may religious employers like hospitals, schools, and social service organizations. Perhaps most insulting is the Administration’s insinuation that religious belief is merely a private affair that should stay locked behind church doors.

As Richard Land, signatory of the letter and president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, explained at a press conference announcing the release of the letter: “[The mandate] is part of an attempt to atrophy, to nullify, to confine and constrain, and to emasculate and neuter religious freedom down to freedom of worship.”

Increasing attempts to privatize religion, relegating faith to worship services and personal thoughts, disregard the important role faith plays in public life and ignores the work that many faith-based institutions do in sustaining civil society. “What our forefathers protected is freedom of conscience, freedom of religion,” Land continued. “That is—the freedom to propagate our faith, to take our faith outside the walls of our home, outside the walls of our church.”

A narrowing view of religion that refuses to protect faith-based organizations’ ability to act in accordance with deeply held beliefs—the same beliefs that spur them to action in the first place—undermines a robust protection of religious liberty.

As Heritage’s Ryan Messmore writes:

Religious freedom is not just for churches. For many individuals and organizations, losing the ability to abide by their religious convictions in carrying out their work imperils their religious identity. It also threatens the effectiveness of their work and the services they provide for those in need. A more comprehensive, robust conception of religion is an important anchor for vigorous, wide-ranging religious freedom—freedom not merely to believe or teach certain doctrines, but to live out one’s faith in all aspects of life. The letter’s 2,500 signatories join an ever-expanding list of individuals and organizations from diverse faith backgrounds who have denounced the mandate’s assault on religious liberty. Just this week, the Alliance Defense Fund filed two lawsuits against the Obama Administration on behalf of Geneva College, a small Pennsylvania school affiliated with the Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America, and Louisiana College, a Southern Baptist school.

Despite the assertions of some pundits and politicians who herald the mandate as supporting “women’s health,” many women have also voiced opposition to the rule’s serious infringement of religious freedom.

Helen Alvaré, associate professor of law at George Mason University, and Kim Daniels, former counsel at the Thomas More Law Center, also released a letter this week signed by more than 750 women in opposition to the anti-conscience mandate. The letter’s bipartisan signatories are as diverse as they are numerous, including businesswomen, writers, lawyers, professors, nurses, teachers, and many others.

“No one speaks for all women on these issues,” the letter states. “Those who purport to do so are simply attempting to deflect attention from the serious religious liberty issues currently at stake.”

Helen M. Alvaré is an Associate Professor of Law who prior to joining the George Mason faculty was an associate professor at Catholic University's Columbus School of Law. Professor Alvaré received her law degree at Cornell University in 1984 and a master's degree in systematic theology from The Catholic University of America in 1989.

Professor Alvaré practiced with the Philadelphia law firm of Stradley, Ronon, Stevens & Young, specializing in commercial litigation and free exercise of religion matters. For three years, she worked at the Office of General Counsel for the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, where she drafted amicus briefs in leading U.S. Supreme Court cases concerning abortion, euthanasia and the Establishment Clause. For the next ten years, she worked with the Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities at the NCCB. There, she lobbied, testified before federal congressional committees, addressed university audiences, and appeared on hundreds of television and radio programs on behalf of the U.S. Catholic bishops. She also assisted the Holy See on matters concerning women, marriage and the family, and respect for human life.

Professor Alvaré chaired the commission investigating clerical abuse in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and is an advisor to Pope Benedict XVI's Pontifical Council for the Laity, as well as an ABC News consultant. Her scholarship regularly treats current controversies about marriage, parenting, and the new reproductive technologies.

Hands Off My Health Care Barry!

Americans for Prosperity to Hold Historic “Hands Off My Health Care” Rally in DC as Supreme Court Takes Up Legal Challenge to Obamacare

The rally will be on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at 1:00 PM (ET) in Washington, DC

AFP Citizen Activists, Including Nearly 1,000 from New York and New Jersey, Will Descend on DC and Call on Supreme Court to Strike Down Unconstitutional Government Takeover of Health Care

BOGOTA, NJ – Americans for Prosperity, the state’s leading free-market, grassroots organization will deliver close to a thousand citizen activists from the New York/New Jersey area to Washington, D.C. this coming Tuesday, March 27, for the group’s “Hands Off My Health Care” rally.

The rally will take place in Upper Senate Park, near the Supreme Court Building, as the nation’s highest court takes up the most important case in a generation: the multi-state challenge to the constitutionality of the government health care takeover.

The “Hands Off My Health Care” rally is expected to draw thousands of citizen activists from across the country and will be headlined by numerous congressional leaders, including Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, Rep. Michelle Bachmann of Minnesota, Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina.

Americans for Prosperity state director Steve Lonegan has issued the following statement in advance of next week’s momentous rally.

“Two years ago, despite months of public opposition and outcry, Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and the Democratic Congress rammed through their government health care takeover, trampling on the Constitution and violating the right of American citizens to make their own health care choices.

“The burden now falls on the Supreme Court to preserve, protect and defend those precious freedoms bequeathed to us by the framers. The Court must rule the individual mandate, compelling American citizens to purchase health insurance against their will, to be unconstitutional, inseverable from the rest of the law and, thus, strike down this vicious assault on our rights in toto.

“On Tuesday, thousands of patriots from across the country will gather in Washington, D.C. to deliver this very message to the nine Supreme Court justices and to the nation at large: We will not stand for our Constitutional rights and liberties to be infringed. We demand that this law be overturned”

Obamacare Will Have Tax Hikes on Young Adults and Children

The jobs-killing Obamacare law contains 20 new or higher taxes on American families and employers. Many of these tax increases fall on families making less than $250,000 — a direct violation of candidate Obama’s promise not to raise “any form” of taxes on these families.

Out of the 20 new or higher taxes in Obamacare, there are four that most hurt young adults and children. Every single one of these taxes violates President Obama’s “firm pledge” not to raise any form of taxes on families making less than $250,000.

The first is the “individual mandate” excise tax. Under Obamacare, all young adults must purchase “qualifying health insurance” (defined by unelected federal bureaucrats) or face an excise tax penalty of at least 2.5 percent of adjusted gross income. For many people in their late 20s or early 30s, health insurance may not fit into a budget that includes paying back student loans, starting a family or finding a job. Others might want to obtain health insurance, but find their preferred plan is no longer “qualified” by President Obama’s HHS bureaucrats. Raising taxes on young people is the wrong way to get them to buy health insurance.

The second Obamacare tax hike on young adults and kids is the “medicine cabinet tax.” This tax increase is already in effect. Since January of 2011, young people have not been able to purchase non-prescription, over-the-counter medicines from their flex-spending accounts (FSAs) or health savings accounts (HSAs). Since many young people require only light use of medical providers and can treat many illnesses over the counter, this tax increase falls on a large percentage of their actual out-of-pocket health expenditures.

The third Obamacare tax hike on young adults and kids is on FSAs. Many young people and parents of young children participate in flex accounts (FSAs) at work. Obamacare imposes a new cap of $2,500 per year on these accounts, which currently face no limits from the tax code. This will, again, fall largely on parents with young children. Consider braces, for example. A parent needing to buy a $4,000 pair of braces might want to run that cost through their flex account to make it pre-tax. A $2,500 cap makes that impossible for the whole cost.

Wendy Long Endorsed by Conservatives

The Wendy Long Convention Speech

This "War Against Women" notion is nonsense, but with the help of the Cowards in the MSM, it has some life. The Cowards of the MSM and Left Wing Racists like Chris Rock, Morgan Freeman, Bill Maher and others try to take the Free Speech away from People with White Skin.

We need fighters with knowledge in the Republican Party. Republicans need women to stand up for religious liberty and not to be cowed by the phony "War Against Women" charge. The real War Against Women is stemming from Barry Soetoro and his assault on our economy.

New York's Republicans and Conservatives should nominate Wendy Long to debate and then replace Gillibrand in the United States Senate, because she's the best qualified Conservative!

Obama's War Against Women

Barry Soetoro continues his “War Against Women”. His strong support for Sharia Law, radical Islam and the misogynist of the Rapping Community are just a few things to show his assault on Women. What a Community that is with Racist Rappers and Women Haters frequently the White House. Even the Food Nazi, Michelle Obama supports the misogynist Rapper with her invites to "Common".

Barry Soetoro lifted his skirt and it is not pretty. Barry tried to attack Sarah Palin when she is not even running for Office. Big mistake as Sarah Palin took Barry to school and b@%#& slapped him with ease. The Video above tries to make Sarah sound like she is wrong. No, she is "spot on" as the Rev. Wright Protege, Barry, and his Thug, Holder attack America!

Sarah Palin had this on her Facebook page:

The far Left continues to believe American voters are not smart enough to grasp the diversionary tactics it employs to distract us from the issues our President just doesn’t want to talk about – issues that affect us all every day and must be addressed.

Exhibit A in these diversionary tactics is an absurd new attack ad President Obama has released taking my comments out of context. I’m not running for any office, but I’m more than happy to accept the dubious honor of being Barack Obama’s “enemy of the week” if that includes the opportunity to debate him on the issues Americans are actually concerned about. (Remember when I said you don’t need a title to make a difference?)

Just off the top of my head, a few of these concerning issues include: a debt crisis that has us hurtling towards a Greek-style collapse, entitlement programs going bankrupt, a credit downgrade for the first time in our history, a government takeover of the health care industry that makes care more expensive and puts a rationing panel of faceless bureaucrats between you and your doctor (aka a “death panel”), $4 and $5 gas at the pump exacerbated by an anti-drilling agenda that rejects good paying energy sector jobs and makes us more dependent on dangerous foreign regimes, a war in Afghanistan that seems unfocused and unending, a global presidential apology tour that’s made us look feeble and ridiculous, a housing market in the tank, the longest streak of high unemployment since World War II, private-sector job creators and industry strangled by burdensome regulations and an out-of-control Obama EPA, an attack on the Constitutional protection of religious liberty, an attack on private industry in right-to-work states, crony capitalism run amok in an administration in bed with their favored cronies to the detriment of genuine free market capitalism, green energy pay-to-play kickbacks to Obama campaign donors, and a Justice Department still stonewalling on a bungled operation that armed violent Mexican drug lords and led to the deaths of hundreds of innocent people.

I’m sure I missed a few things, but the list is just for starters. Along with millions of others, I’m willing and free to discuss these issues with the President anywhere, anytime; and I’m sure any of the four patriots currently running for the GOP nomination would also welcome the opportunity to talk about the problems everyday Americans face due to the abject failure of our current administration’s policies. The President will dismiss all of these problems by saying, “Well, uh, ‘change isn’t easy.’” But considering that candidate Obama promised to turn back the waters and heal the planet, the American people had at least a reasonable expectation that, at the bare minimum, he wouldn’t bankrupt our country…
