Just a Shotgun

You're sound asleep when you hear a thump outside your bedroom door.
Half-awake, and nearly paralyzed with fear, you hear muffled whispers.
At least two people have broken into your house and are moving your way.
With your heart pumping, you reach down beside your bed and pick up your shotgun.

You rack a shell into the chamber, then inch toward the door and open it.

In the darkness, you make out two shadows.

One holds something that looks like a crowbar.

When the intruder brandishes it as if to strike, you raise the shotgun and fire.

The blast knocks both thugs to the floor.

One writhes and screams while the second man crawls to the front door and lurches outside.

As you pick up the telephone to call police, you know you're in trouble.

In your country, most guns were outlawed years before, and the few that are privately owned
are so stringently regulated as to make them useless..

Yours was never registered.

Police arrive and inform you that the second burglar has died.

They arrest you for First Degree Murder and Illegal Possession of a Firearm.

When you talk to your attorney, he tells you not to worry: authorities will probably
plea the case down to manslaughter.

"What kind of sentence will I get?" you ask.

"Only ten-to-twelve years," he replies, as if that's nothing.

"Behave yourself, and you'll be out in seven."

The next day, the shooting is the lead story in the local newspaper.

Somehow, you're portrayed as an eccentric vigilante while the two men you shot
are represented as choirboys.

Their friends and relatives can't find an unkind word to say about them..

Buried deep down in the article, authorities acknowledge that both "victims" have been arrested numerous times.

But the next day's headline says it all:
"Lovable Rogue Son Didn't Deserve to Die."

The thieves have been transformed from career criminals into Robin Hood-type pranksters..

As the days wear on, the story takes wings.

The national media picks it up, then the international media.

The surviving burglar has become a folk hero.

Your attorney says the thief is preparing to sue you, and he'll probably win.

The media publishes reports that your home has been burglarized several times in the past and that you've been critical of local police for their lack of effort in apprehending the suspects.

After the last break-in, you told your neighbor that you would be prepared next time.

The District Attorney uses this to allege that you were lying in wait for the burglars.

A few months later, you go to trial.

The charges haven't been reduced, as your lawyer had so confidently predicted.

When you take the stand, your anger at the injustice of it all works against you..

Prosecutors paint a picture of you as a mean, vengeful man.

It doesn't take long for the jury to convict you of all charges.

The judge sentences you to life in prison.

This case really happened.

On August 22, 1999, Tony Martin of Emneth, Norfolk, England, killed one burglar and wounded a second.

In April, 2000, he was convicted and is now serving a life term...

How did it become a crime to defend one's own life in the once great British Empire ?

It started with the Pistols Act of 1903.

This seemingly reasonable law forbade selling pistols to minors or felons and established that handgun sales were to be made only to those who had a license.
The Firearms Act of 1920 expanded licensing to include not only handguns but all firearms except shotguns..

Later laws passed in 1953 and 1967 outlawed the carrying of any weapon by private citizens and mandated the registration of all shotguns.


Momentum for total handgun confiscation began in earnest after the Hungerford mass shooting in 1987.

Michael Ryan, a mentally disturbed man with a Kalashnikov rifle, walked down the streets shooting everyone he saw. When the smoke cleared, 17 people were dead.
The British public, already de-sensitized by eighty years of "gun control", demanded even tougher restrictions. (The seizure of all privately owned handguns was the objective even though Ryan used a rifle.)

Nine years later, at Dunblane, Scotland, Thomas Hamilton used a semi-automatic weapon to murder 16 children and a teacher at a public school. For many years, the media had portrayed all gun owners as mentally unstable, or worse, criminals.

Now the press had a real kook with which to beat up law-abiding gun owners.
Day after day, week after week, the media gave up all pretense of objectivity and demanded a total ban on all handguns.

The Dunblane Inquiry, a few months later, sealed the fate of the few sidearms still owned by private citizens.

During the years in which the British government incrementally took away most gun rights, the notion that a citizen had the right to armed self-defense came to be seen as vigilantism.

Authorities refused to grant gun licenses to people who were threatened, claiming that self-defense was no longer considered a reason to own a gun. Citizens who shot burglars or robbers or rapists were charged while the real criminals were released.

Indeed, after the Martin shooting, a police spokesman was quoted as saying,
"We cannot have people take the law into their own hands."
All of Martin's neighbors had been robbed numerous times,
and several elderly people were severely injured in beatings by young thugs
who had no fear of the consequences.

Martin himself, a collector of antiques, had seen most of his collection trashed or stolen by burglars. When the Dunblane Inquiry ended, citizens who owned handguns were given three months to turn them over to local authorities. Being good British subjects, most people obeyed the law.

The few who didn't were visited by police and threatened with ten-year prison sentences if they didn't comply.

Police later bragged that they'd taken nearly 200,000 handguns from private citizens.
How did the authorities know who had handguns? The guns had been registered and licensed.

Kind of like cars. Sound familiar?

Why Liberals Don't Get the Tea Party Movement

Our universities haven't taught much political history for decades. No wonder so many progressives have disdain for the principles that animated the Federalist debates.

Highly educated people say the darndest things, these days particularly about the tea party movement. Vast numbers of other highly educated people read and hear these dubious pronouncements, smile knowingly, and nod their heads in agreement. University educations and advanced degrees notwithstanding, they lack a basic understanding of the contours of American constitutional government.
New York Times columnist Paul Krugman got the ball rolling in April 2009, just ahead of the first major tea party rallies on April 15, by falsely asserting that "the tea parties don't represent a spontaneous outpouring of public sentiment. They're AstroTurf (fake grass-roots) events."


Having learned next to nothing in the intervening 16 months about one of the most spectacular grass-roots political movements in American history, fellow Times columnist Frank Rich denied in August of this year that the tea party movement is "spontaneous and leaderless," insisting instead that it is the instrument of billionaire brothers David and Charles Koch.

Washington Post columnist E. J. Dionne criticized the tea party as unrepresentative in two ways. It "constitutes a sliver of opinion on the extreme end of politics receiving attention out of all proportion with its numbers," he asserted last month. This was a step back from his rash prediction five months before that since it "represents a relatively small minority of Americans on the right end of politics," the tea party movement "will not determine the outcome of the 2010 elections."

In February, Mr. Dionne argued that the tea party was also unrepresentative because it reflected a political principle that lost out at America's founding and deserves to be permanently retired: "Anti-statism, a profound mistrust of power in Washington goes all the way back to the Anti-Federalists who opposed the Constitution itself because they saw it concentrating too much authority in the central government."

Mr. Dionne follows in the footsteps of progressive historian Richard Hofstadter, whose influential 1964 book "The Paranoid Style in American Politics" argued that Barry Goldwater and his supporters displayed a "style of mind" characterized by "heated exaggeration, suspiciousness, and conspiratorial fantasy." Similarly, the "suspicion of government" that the tea party movement shares with the Anti-Federalists, Mr. Dionne maintained, "is not amenable to 'facts'" because "opposing government is a matter of principle."

To be sure, the tea party sports its share of clowns, kooks and creeps. And some of its favored candidates and loudest voices have made embarrassing statements and embraced reckless policies. This, however, does not distinguish the tea party movement from the competition.

Born in response to President Obama's self-declared desire to fundamentally change America, the tea party movement has made its central goals abundantly clear. Activists and the sizeable swath of voters who sympathize with them want to reduce the massively ballooning national debt, cut runaway federal spending, keep taxes in check, reinvigorate the economy, and block the expansion of the state into citizens' lives.

In other words, the tea party movement is inspired above all by a commitment to limited government. And that does distinguish it from the competition.

But far from reflecting a recurring pathology in our politics or the losing side in the debate over the Constitution, the devotion to limited government lies at the heart of the American experiment in liberal democracy. The Federalists who won ratification of the Constitution—most notably Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay—shared with their Anti-Federalist opponents the view that centralized power presented a formidable and abiding threat to the individual liberty that it was government's primary task to secure. They differed over how to deal with the threat.

The Anti-Federalists—including Patrick Henry, Samuel Bryan and Robert Yates—adopted the traditional view that liberty depended on state power exercised in close proximity to the people. The Federalists replied in Federalist 9 that the "science of politics," which had "received great improvement," showed that in an extended and properly structured republic liberty could be achieved and with greater security and stability.

This improved science of politics was based not on abstract theory or complex calculations but on what is referred to in Federalist 51 as "inventions of prudence" grounded in the reading of classic and modern authors, broad experience of self-government in the colonies, and acute observations about the imperfections and finer points of human nature.

It taught that constitutionally enumerated powers; a separation, balance, and blending of these powers among branches of the federal government; and a distribution of powers between the federal and state governments would operate to leave substantial authority to the states while both preventing abuses by the federal government and providing it with the energy needed to defend liberty.

Whether members have read much or little of The Federalist, the tea party movement's focus on keeping government within bounds and answerable to the people reflects the devotion to limited government embodied in the Constitution. One reason this is poorly understood among our best educated citizens is that American politics is poorly taught at the universities that credentialed them. Indeed, even as the tea party calls for the return to constitutional basics, our universities neglect The Federalist and its classic exposition of constitutional principles.

For the better part of two generations, the best political science departments have concentrated on equipping students with skills for performing empirical research and teaching mathematical models that purport to describe political affairs. Meanwhile, leading history departments have emphasized social history and issues of race, class and gender at the expense of constitutional history, diplomatic history and military history.

Neither professors of political science nor of history have made a priority of instructing students in the founding principles of American constitutional government. Nor have they taught about the contest between the progressive vision and the conservative vision that has characterized American politics since Woodrow Wilson (then a political scientist at Princeton) helped launch the progressive movement in the late 19th century by arguing that the Constitution had become obsolete and hindered democratic reform.

Then there are the proliferating classes in practical ethics and moral reasoning. These expose students to hypothetical conundrums involving individuals in surreal circumstances suddenly facing life and death decisions, or present contentious public policy questions and explore the range of respectable progressive opinions for resolving them. Such exercises may sharpen students' ability to argue. They do little to teach about self-government.

They certainly do not teach about the virtues, or qualities of mind and character, that enable citizens to shoulder their political responsibilities and prosper amidst the opportunities and uncertainties that freedom brings. Nor do they teach the beliefs, practices and associations that foster such virtues and those that endanger them.

Those who doubt that the failings of higher education in America have political consequences need only reflect on the quality of progressive commentary on the tea party movement. Our universities have produced two generations of highly educated people who seem unable to recognize the spirited defense of fundamental American principles, even when it takes place for more than a year and a half right in front of their noses.

A White House 'Gunrunner'?

The Law: Operation Gunwalker, the rogue ATF operation to arm Mexico's cartels, extends now to three White House officials. A bell goes off with the one named Dan Restrepo.

Late last Friday, CBS News and the Los Angeles Times almost buried the news that Restrepo, the National Security Council's top man for Latin America, and two other officials, were in on ATF memos from the Gunwalker operation called "Fast and Furious."

That blows apart White House claims that it had no idea the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was encouraging frontmen for Mexico's cartels to buy weapons from U.S. gun dealers — to "trace" them afterward.

Some 2,000 U.S. guns were sold in Gunwalker but simply disappeared — until they turned up at massacres in Mexico and at the murder scenes of U.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Terry and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agent Jaime Zapata.

But outgoing ATF acting director Ken Melson and others who've been the fall guys in this scandal darkly hint that their orders came from the White House, and domestic critics think Gunwalker can only be explained as a White House bid to boost support for gun control. Restrepo's involvement distinctly raises both possibilities.

Restrepo is a political operative whose interests are more domestic than Latin American. As a result, he's botched every Latin American operation he's had his hand in, appeasing enemies and blaming the U.S.:

• Honduras: In 2009, Restrepo was behind a U.S. bid to swiftly declare Honduras' constitutional ouster of its president "a coup" and sanctioned the country, playing into the hands of Venezuela's Hugo Chavez, who had attempted to make Honduras a colony.

• Cuba: Restrepo was behind loosening sanctions on Castro's Cuba, which has emboldened the regime to act against Americans. While Castro imprisoned Alan Gross, a U.S. contractor who was distributing satellite phones to dissidents, the Obama administration said nothing.

• Colombia: Its troops captured drug "kingpin of kingpins" Walid Makled, who had extensive knowledge of Venezuelan official involvement in trafficking. U.S. attorneys wanted him extradited, but Colombia's President Juan Manuel Santos said President Obama never asked. When IBD asked Restrepo whether he advised Obama to ask, Restrepo defensively said he did. But that's at odds with what Santos said.

• Venezuela: Treasury Department officials complained Restrepo kept names of high-ranking Venezuelan officials with ties to drug dealers off its "Kingpin List," in a naive effort to keep pressure off Chavez.

• Now Restrepo tries to pin Mexico's drug war not on Hugo Chavez's trafficker allies, but on gun dealers from the U.S.

There's little doubt that's his line, because blaming U.S. gun dealers and calling for a U.S. assault weapon ban were his ideas from his days spent at the Center for American Progress, an Obama-linked think tank.

The U.S. "will work to inhibit the flow of weapons ... across our border," Restrepo told Mexican media.

Meanwhile, when Obama met with Mexico's President Felipe Calderon, both erroneously declared that U.S. weapons fueled Mexico's drug war — on Restrepo's advice.

Blogger Mike Vanderbroegh thinks that if Restrepo wasn't the author of Gunwalker he'd know who is and should be called to tell Congress. Either he's kept Obama in the dark about Gunwalker, or Obama should be impeached.

U.S. Fears Tripoli May Deploy Gas As Chaos Mounts

WASHINGTON—The government of Col. Moammar Gadhafi hasn’t destroyed significant stockpiles of mustard gas and other chemical-weapons agents, raising fears in Washington about what could happen to them—and whether they may be used—as Libya slides further into chaos.

Tripoli also maintains control of aging Scud B missiles, U.S. officials said, as well as 1,000 metric tons of uranium yellowcake and vast amounts of conventional weapons that Col. Gadhafi has channeled in the past to militants operating in countries like Sudan and Chad.

So will these weapons of mass destruction ever be found? And, if not, will the Obama administration ever hear the end of it?

Current and former U.S. officials said in interviews that Washington’s counter-proliferation operations against Libya over the past decade have scored gains, in particular the dismantling of Tripoli’s nascent nuclear-weapons program and its Scud C missile stockpiles. But the level of instability in Libya, and Col. Gadhafi’s history of brutality, continues to make the U.S. focus on the arms and chemical agents that remain, they said.

"When you have a guy who’s as irrational as Gadhafi with some serious weapons at his disposal, it’s always a concern," said a U.S. official. "But we haven’t yet seen him move to use any kind of mustard gas or chemical weapon" during the unrest.

Yet. Still, the situation over there could be a helluva lot worse if it wasn’t for the invasion of Iraq and the subsequent disarming of Mr. Gadhafi by the Bush administration.

The George W. Bush administration reached a key agreement with Tripoli in 2003 that called for Libya to scrap its weapons of mass destruction programs in return for normalized diplomatic relations.

Within months of the pact, Col. Gadhafi’s government sent to the U.S. the critical infrastructure for its nuclear-weapons programs, including uranium hexafluoride stockpiles, centrifuge machines and parts for a nuclear fuel-conversion facility. Libya also destroyed its longer-range missiles and 3,300 aerial munitions used to disperse mustard gas and other chemical agents…

But the program to eradicate Libya’s chemical agents, as well as its chemical weapons production facility, was delayed by spats between Washington and Tripoli over funding and logistics, according to U.S. officials…

Libya was to have destroyed all 23 metric tons of its mustard gas by the end of last year, according to the [Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons], but 9.5 metric tons remain. The Hague-based body said Libya was granted an extension until May to destroy the rest.

Who granted him this extension? The Obama administration or the Hague?

Libya also possesses more than half of the 1,300 metric tons of precursor chemicals used for developing chemical agents. The material is believed to be stored in jugs at the former Rabta chemical-weapons facility…

"Had the destruction process not started, we would be facing a far more dangerous situation," said Paula DeSutter, who helped oversee disarmament issues in George W. Bush’s State Department. "On the other hand, one would certainly feel more secure if all of the mustard gas had been eliminated." …

Do you think the Bush administration will get any credit from Mr. Obama or the news media for having disarmed Col. Gadhafi even this much? Isn’t this one more dividend from the invasion of Iraq?

Who elected you to speak for honest, decent, average Americans who struggle against the odds to overcome real obstacles to living full and productive lives? Was there a special election I didn't know about?

As a self-appointed savior of the American people, what would you do to solve the problems we are facing today? From your past rants in the Sun-Sentinel, you seem to put all the blame on Republicans, Conservatives, and Tea Party supporters. Who has had the most power since 2007 to make this better? For two years 2007 to 2009, the Democrats had a robust majority in both Houses of Congress and the Presidency. Since 2009, the Democrats have had the majority in the Senate and the Presidency, and you blame the Republicans etc.? Really?

What President was in office when our annual deficit reached $1.5 trillion a year and still counting? What President was in charge, at the beginning of his presidency, when the total debt stood at $9.8 trillion, and now after 2 1/2 years the debt is over $14.5 trillion? What President was in charge when our credit rating was lowered from AAA, for the first time in our history? Could it have been Barack Hussein Obama? Does our illustrious, objective pundit, Stephen L. Goldstein acknowledge these facts, or is he too far gone with the malady he has contracted called CRI (Cranial Rectal Inversion)? "Me Thinks" that is the case for poor Stephen.

7. Grant recognition of Red China. Admission of Red China to the U.N.

8. Set up East and West Germany as separate states in spite of Khrushchev's promise in 1955 to settle the German question by free elections under supervision of the U.N.

Obama DOJ Sues “Vocal and Aggressive” Pro Lifer

While Obama’s Justice Department dismissed a critical voter intimidation case against a radical black revolutionary group, it’s going after a pro life advocate the agency calls one of “the most vocal and aggressive anti-abortion protestors.”

Ironically, the administration claims that the pro life advocate, a Maryland man named Richard Retta, intimidated and interfered with women seeking abortions in Washington D.C.-area clinics much like members of the New Black Panther Party did to white voters during the 2008 presidential election. The difference is that the Black Panthers, clad in military attire, used weapons, racial insults and profanity to deter voters.

Judicial Watch obtained records that show political appointees at the DOJ ordered the Black Panther case dismissed after the administration colluded with leftwing groups. JW’s investigation also revealed that the official Obama appointed to head the DOJ’s civil rights division, Assistant Attorney General Thomas Perez, lied under oath to cover up the Black Panther voter intimidation scandal.
Now Perez is pursuing a pro lifer for violating a Clinton-era law (Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act) that prohibits any sort of interference with a woman seeking an abortion. Retta physically obstructed a patient and volunteer escorts attempting to enter the Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, according to a DOJ complaint filed a few days ago. He also “frequently walks very closely beside patients as they walk to the clinic” and he follows them into the street and oncoming traffic. Sometimes he yells at them, the feds claim.

In announcing the lawsuit, Perez vowed to pursue similar cases, saying that “individuals who seek to obtain or provide reproductive health services have the right to do so without encountering hazardous physical obstructions.” If one unarmed guy is considered such a threat, then a barrier of big, muscular, armed men intimidating voters during a presidential election certainly merits attention from the agency charged with enforcing the law and defending the interests of the United States. Yet that case got dismissed.

of the basics of Islam, complete

'Please, correct me if I'm wrong,
but I understand that most Imams and
clerics of Islam have declared
a holy jihad [Holy war] against the
infidels of the world and, that by
killing an infidel,
(which is a command to all Muslims)
they are assured of a place in heaven.
If that's the case, can you give me
the definition of an infidel?'
There was no disagreement with my
statements and, without hesitation,
he replied, 'Non-believers!'
I responded, 'So, let me make sure
I have this straight. All followers of
Allah have been commanded to kill
everyone who is not of your faith so
they can have a place in heaven.
Is that correct?'

The expression on his face
changed from one of authority
and command to that of a
little boy who had just been
caught with his hand
in the cookie jar.'
He sheepishly replied, 'Yes.'
I then stated, 'Well, sir, I have
a real problem trying to
imagine The Pope commanding
all Catholics to kill those of
your faith or Dr.Stanley ordering
all Protestants to do the same
in order to guarantee them
a place in heaven!'
The Muslim was speechless!

I continued, 'I also have a
problem with being your friend
when you and your brother clerics
are telling your followers to
kill me! Let me ask you a question:
Would you rather have your Allah,
who tells you to kill me in
order for you to go to heaven,
or my Jesus who tells me to
love you because I am going
to heaven and He wants you
to be there with me?'

and/or promoters of the
'Diversification' training seminar
were not happy with my way
of dealing with the Islamic Imam,

Non-Jew Supporting Prime Minister Netanyahu Not Obama

Dear Rabbi Bruce Warshal:

As a non-Jew reading your column in the Jewish Journal (June 22, 2011), I can't believe how blind you are to the realities of the world and to the Middle East in particular.

P.M. Netanyahu, as opposed to your position, is looking out for the citizens of Israel, not playing to the liberal left in his country and ours. Why is negotiation always a one-way street, whereby Israel must give up something, but the Palestinians don't have to give anything in return? They won't even give up the fact that Israel exists and that it should be free from terrorist attacks.

You forgot to mention that in Obama's "road map" for peace, he said Israel should go back to the 1967 borders and negotiate with the Palestinians (with Hamas included at the table) with "mutually agreed upon land swaps". The catch word here is "mutually", which means that if one party does not agree there can be no land swaps. Meanwhile, Israel then must work through the idea that the 1967 borders are a legitimate bargaining chip that cannot be agreed upon, but gives credence to the borders as of 1967. As P.M. Netanyahu said, that's like Israel committing suicide.

How can you be so naive to assume that you can negotiate with an adversary who wants you dead and Israel destroyed? You and your fellow liberal rabbi's are blinded to the facts by your far-left liberal ideology. God help Israel if "wusses" like you ever attain the majority in Israel. You should be ashamed, as you would throw Israel under the bus just like your fellow appeaser, Barack Hussein Obama, but then again it looks like you and Obama have no shame.

Dear Abby,

My husband has a long record of money problems. He runs up huge credit-card bills and at the end of the month, if I try to pay them off, he shouts at me, saying I am stealing his money. Says pay the minimum and lets our kids worry about the rest, but already we can hardly keep up with the interest. Also he has been so arrogant and abusive toward our neighbors that most of them no longer speak to us.

The few who do are an odd bunch, to whom he has been giving a lot of expensive gifts, running up our bills even more. Also, he has gotten religious. One week he hangs out with Catholics and the next with people who say the Pope is the Anti-Christ, and the next he's with Muslims.

Finally, the last straw. He's demanding that before anyone can be in the same room with him, they must sign a loyalty oath. It's just so horribly creepy! Can you help?

Isn't it amazing that your column entitled, "Can America sacrifice 15 million hungry kids", can come up with the figure that there are 15 million hungry kids in America? Where did you get this "assumed" figure, from one of the "loony liberal" left websites? Could it not have been 5, 10, 20, or 25 million, or for that matter 100? Who determined that figure of "assumed" hungry children, some Saul Alinsky acolyte trying to put America in a bad light? C'mon Rachel, you should know better than that. Most people are not that gullible or stupid enough to believe that crap.

With all the government help that's available to people and poor people in particular, it is almost impossible to have starving (hungry) children in our midst. We all have been hungry at one time or another in our lives, but to imply that we have a vast army of hungry children is preposterous. Have you seen the size and girth of the children in poor neighborhoods lately? They don't have an under nourishment problem, they have an obesity problem. Many of those "hungry" children come from families that have cars, LCD T.V.'s, cell phones, $150 Nike sneakers, and tattoos to go along with their "empty bellies". I know I'll be classified as being heartless and callous by pooh-poohing your claims of sacrificing hungry children by society, and by politicians who are only looking out to balance the damn budget as these millions of children starve. Hogwash! I will not succumb to the "political correctness" norms put forth by the liberals and neither should you.

Your liberal (or is it Progressive?) slant on this matter is typical of the continuous liberal attack on Republicans, Conservatives, and common sense. The canard that only liberals have the sensitivity and compassion to understand the plight of the poor is downright insulting. It has been your policies starting back in FDR's time and the start of LBJ's "War on Poverty" that has added to our social problems by making more and more people dependent on the government for handouts. Your rant in this column is just that - another anti-American bashing with no basis in fact except some pulled out of the air erroneous figures to justify a non-existent problem.

Is this the kind of rhetoric we can expect from the liberals in this upcoming election season? Already the "class warfare" banner has been unfurled by the Democrats as they can't possibly run on their dismal economic record and failed foreign policy. Make as many of the people dependent on the government to gain their votes, and make the successful (the rich) their oppressors, will be the modus operandi of these self-styled hypocrites called Democrats. Listening To Progressives Is Torture

Dear Professor Robert Watson:

I guess you couldn't resist bringing in the Bush Administration when you were describing the horrible conditions at Andersonville prison during the Civil War (S/S June 19, 2011).

How can you equate the "shocking" revelations about the so-called enhanced "torture" at Guantanomo with what went on at Andersonville? The military detention center at Guantanomo is an example of our commitment to being humane to our enemies, and should not be used as a political hammer against your political adversaries (the Republicans and Conservatives). The military prison (detention center) at Guantanomo is the epitome of how a prison should combine punishment (detention) and at the same time being humane. You, supposedly being an objective historian (who heads up a liberal progressive group called, "Think, Act, and Lead"), should not try to compare apples and oranges as you did with Guantanomo and Andersonville.

You never mention that your buddy (Obama) has continued these supposed un-American detention policies, but you always equate them with the Bush Administration. Your bias is blatant and overt, especially troubling for an objective professor of American Studies at Lynn University (or so you claim to be).

As an aside, you liberals (progressives) use the word torture as something that we, as a country, do on a regular basis. To me, torture is cutting off fingers, arms, legs, ears and tongues, putting electrical wires on genitals, lashing people with whips, stoning political opponents etc., etc., as opposed to our enhanced techniques of waterboarding (no one has died or had permanent injuries as a result of this procedure), sleep deprivation and other psychological methods. Granted, these are not pleasant techniques, but do they rise to the level of what should be called torture? I guess if a Republican does it it is torture, but if a Democrat does it it is not torture. The hypocrisy of the left (of which you are an "esteemed" member) is on display almost daily in the biased media. Shame on you and your other fellow travelers.

Once upon a time - in the far away land of our childhood, children began learning life's lessons at the knee of one of their parents who would make the time to read aloud, one of the beautifully written stories-with-a-moral, from the family copy of Grimm's Fairy Tales.

Fast forward to today's SunSentinel, the waning local periodical that specializes in hand-picked stories of present-day immorality in its news coverage - and the grimmest of fairy tales in its editorials and on its Opinion Page. Stephen Leftist Goldstein's column that appeared in the aforementioned newsrag on Sunday, June 12, 2011 was so very typical of his obstreperous writings that are sadly, unfit for the ears of any of today's children, whatever their age. In this particular edition, he quantum leaped his customary level of tedious drivel with a soaring tribute to himself that I have elected to re-title: "Goldilox & The Three Bores - Me, Myself and I".

I won't bore you dear reader nor frankly, irk myself to an even greater degree, by quoting from his megalomaniacal treatise. Suffice it to say that in all my time trodding this Earth, I've never encountered his like. When it comes to such a unique amalgam of vitriol, hard-left bias, hatred of conservatism, intolerance of opposing viewpoints plus - an out-and-out self-adoration that borders on the obscene, this weird dude has no equal. It boggles the mind as to how much or even why the SunSentinel compensates this pretentious paranoid but, one doesn't need the specifics to arrive at the assessment that whatever the amount, Goldilox is overpaid by a bunch. In response to anticipated rebuttal if there is any, please understand that there is no envy on the part of this writer, just a boatload of incredulity.

Hypocrisy, unrestrained lunacy, delusional Democrat clap-trap and mind-blowing over-boring pomposity simply ooze from between the keys as Goldilox - the infallible, conjures up his tiresome tirades.

NEW ORLEANS - Texas Republican Gov. Rick Perry - a highly-buzzed-about potential GOP presidential candidate - said at the Republican Leadership Conference Saturday that Republicans should "stop apologizing" for taking conservative positions on social and fiscal issues.

"It saddens me when sometimes my fellow Republicans duck and cover in the face of pressure from the left," said Perry, referencing calls for a "truce" on social issues. He added: "Our party cannot be all things to all people."

"Our opponents on the left are never going to like us, so let's quit trying to curry favor with them," continued Perry.

He called on the party activists present to "stand up" and "speak with pride about our morals and our values ... let's stop this American downward spiral."

EPA: Obama Job Killer

EPA regulations aim to close power plants, sending
hundreds of thousands of Americans to the unemployment line!

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has plans to impose 946 pages of new regulations on U.S. power plants.

Disregarding the fact that U.S. energy companies' emissions are already low, and considerably less than pollutants found in nature from volcanoes and geysers, the EPA is primed and ready to send American businesses and consumers an annual bill of $10.9 billion a year!

The EPA is imposing Barack Obama's agenda to use air pollution and carbon dioxide restrictions as an effort to require energy companies to lower emissions to zero, which will bankrupt coal companies - causing utility rates to skyrocket!

The American Electric Power Co. Inc. told The Houston Chronicle that the EPA's new regulations would require the company to shut down five plants and reduce operations at six others, with a loss of 600 jobs, to comply with new rules for coal-fired power plants.

According to U.S. News and World Report: The EPA's pollution regulations will slam the coal industry so hard that hundreds of thousands of jobs will be lost, and electric rates will skyrocket 11 percent to over 23 percent, according to a new study based on government data.

As a result, the EPA's regulations will not only lead to increased unemployment, but will also lead to higher prices on food, and increased costs for heating and air conditioning!

The EPA claims that its regulations are fair, and are an effort to limit emissions of mercury, lead and other toxins from coal-fired plants. But to build its case against mercury, the EPA ignored evidence and clinical studies that contradict its regulatory agenda - which is to punish hydrocarbon use.

According to Willie Soon, an independent scientist and expert on mercury and public health issues, and Paul Driessen, a senior policy adviser for the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow, the EPA systematically cherry-picked supportive studies (many of them dated) and ignored extensive evidence and clinical studies that contradict its regulatory agenda, which is to punish hydrocarbon use and close down coal-fired power plants.

And, to advance its green agenda, the EPA has given at least $3.8 billion in taxpayer money to various nonprofit and advocacy organizations and environmental justice groups over the past decade.

Soon and Driessen report that: America's coal-burning power plants emit an estimated 41-48 tons of mercury per year. U.S. forest fires emit at least 44 tons per year. Cremation of human remains discharges 26 tons. Chinese power plants eject 400 tons, and volcanoes, sub-sea vents, geysers and other sources spew out 9,000-10,000 additional tons per year. And, the 200 million tons of mercury naturally present in seawater have never posed a danger to any living being.

And yet, the EPA nevertheless demands that utility companies spend billions every year retrofitting the coal-fired power plants that produce half of all U.S. electricity, and 70 to 98% of electricity in 12 states.

Soon and Driessen add that: mercury (Hg) has always existed naturally in Earth's environment; mercury is found in air, water, rocks, soil and trees (which absorb it from the environment). This is why our bodies evolved with proteins and antioxidants that help protect us from this and other potential contaminants.

A further defense comes from selenium, which is found in fish and animals.

Its strong attraction to mercury molecules protects fish and people against buildups of methylmercury, mercury's biologically active and more toxic form.

The EPAs regulators simultaneously ignore the positive results of medical studies that clearly show its new restrictions are not needed and will not improve people's health. ... The proposed standards will do nothing to reduce exaggerated threats from mercury and other air pollutants. Indeed, the rules will worsen, rather than improve America's health -- especially for young children and women of child-bearing age. Not only will they raise heating, air conditioning and food costs; they will scare people away from nutritious fish that should be a part of everyone's diet.

Since our power plants account for less than 0.5% of all the mercury in the air we breathe, eliminating every milligram of it will do nothing about the other 99.5% in our atmosphere. And, while environmentalists are very concerned about the 41 to 48 tons of mercury released into the atmosphere by U.S. coal-fired power plants, they don't see a threat in the 400 tons of mercury coughed up by China's fossil fuel power plants.

The EPA nevertheless demands that American utility companies spend billions every year retrofitting coal-fired power plants that produce half of all U.S. electricity.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the price hikes from a 15 percent cut in emissions would increase energy costs for the average American household to between $680 and $1,500, every year!

The Wall Street Journal reports that: ...the greatest inequities are geographic and would be imposed on the parts of the U.S. that rely most on manufacturing or fossil fuels -- particularly coal, which generates most power in the Midwest, Southern and Plains states.

Coal provides more than half of U.S. electricity, and 25 states get more than 50% of their electricity from conventional coal-fired generation.

In Ohio, it totals 86%, according to the Energy Information Administration. Ratepayers in Indiana (94%), Missouri (85%), New Mexico (80%), Pennsylvania (56%), West Virginia (98%) and Wyoming (95%) are going to get soaked.

With the nation's electrical power grids already taxed, green car manufacturers like GM want Congress to slap an additional $1 per gallon tax on gasoline to force consumers to buy electric cars. GM wants people plugging their cars into an electrical outlet for fuel rather than at the neighborhood Exxon, putting even greater stress on the electrical power grids as the EPA tries to kill the coal industry without wondering where those electric cars are going to “fill up” during the brown outs that will become much more common without the ample supply of electricity coal provides.

RIGHT NOW, the EPA continues to overreach its authority by pushing the Obama Administration's green agenda which will ultimately destroy the American economy by imposing impossible regulations that will bankrupt U.S. businesses, leading to even more employee layoffs and imposing lower standards of living on American consumers.

To put an end to the EPA's unnecessary and costly regulations, Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.), introduced S.892, the Consolidation of Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Agency Act of 2011, a bill that would merge the Department of Energy (DOE) and the EPA into a single, new agency called the Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE).

By combining the duplicative functions of the EPA and DOE, the consolidation could save U.S. taxpayers more than $3 billion a year based on projections made by the Government Accountability Office and the President's 2012 budget request.

The DOEE could also restore the original stated purpose and goals of the EPA, which included protecting human health, safeguarding the natural environment and addressing the energy, environmental, and nuclear challenges of the U.S. through transformative science and technology solutions - without overreaching its constitutional authority.

Sen. Burr's bill would ELIMINATE the EPA's unfair and unnecessary regulations that penalize hard-working Americans who, under the EPA's new requirements, would suffer job losses and would be impoverished by the exorbitant costs added to food and utilities.

If Congress passes S.892, the EPA's excessive penalties on U.S. energy companies would be eliminated - saving $3 billion, annually!
