Mitch McConnell & John Boehner

When we Conservative, loyal, patriotic Americans voted Republicans back into the majority of both chambers of The Congress – and you were elected to leadership roles – we anticipated that you would take bold steps to 1. Stop the flood of devastating policies being jammed down our throats by this president with a personal agenda totally at odds with America’s founding principles and time-honored traditions and  2. Take immediate steps to mitigate and reverse the list of those policies that have brought our nation economic chaos, a critically dangerous illegal immigration situation – and a terribly, corrosive feeling of despair and utter hopelessness about our very survival as a people – i.e., Baltimore.  

While you made some encouraging statements, you seem to have taken every opportunity to go along joyfully, with this president’s continuing effort to degrade our liberties and over-regulate our lives.  You do not show any signs of performing in the manner you promised during the mid-term elections campaign.

There is a popular saying among people who are trying to maintain the peace & security of our population in the face of increasing lunacy in public places: “If you see something; say something.”  That is still valid but I’d like to re-arrange it just a bit so that you know exactly how I feel about your performances, Mitch & John:

“IF YOU SAY SOMETHING;  DO SOMETHING!”

A Father and Daughter Discussion

A young woman was about to finish her first year of college.
Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be a very Liberal Democrat, and among other liberal ideals, was very much in favor of higher taxes to support more government programs, in other words redistribution of wealth.

She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch Republican, a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures that she had participated in, and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt that her father had for years harbored an evil, selfish desire to keep what he thought should be his.

One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher taxes on the rich and the need for more
government programs. The self professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors had to be the truth and she indicated so to her father. He responded by asking how she was doing in school.

Taken aback, she answered rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA, and let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she was taking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which left her no time to go out and party like other people she knew. She didn't even have time for a boyfriend, and didn't really have many college friends, because she spent all her time studying.

Her father listened and then asked, 'How is your friend Audrey doing?' She replied, 'Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy classes, she never studies, and she barely has a 2.0 GPA. She is so popular on campus; college for her is a blast. She's always invited to all the parties and lots of times she doesn't even show up for classes because she's too hung over.'

Her wise father asked his daughter, 'Why don't you go to the Dean's office and ask him to deduct 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your friend who only has a 2.0. That way, you will both have a 3.0 GPA, and certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA.'

The daughter, visibly shocked by her father's suggestion, angrily fired back, 'That's a crazy idea; how would that be fair? I've worked really hard for my grades! I've invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard work! Audrey has done next to nothing toward her degree. She played while I worked my tail off!'

The father slowly smiled, winked and said gently,
'Welcome to the Republican party.'
If anyone has a better explanation of the difference between Republican and Democrat, I'm all ears. If you ever wondered what side of the fence you sit on, this is a great test!
If a conservative doesn't like guns, he doesn't buy one.
If a liberal doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.
If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn't eat meat.
If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products
banned for everyone.
If a conservative is homosexual, he quietly leads his life.
If a liberal is homosexual, he demands legislated respect.
If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to
better his situation.
A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him.
If a conservative doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels.
Liberals demand that those they don't like be shut down.
If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church.
A liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced. (Unless it's a foreign religion, of course!)
If conservatives reads this, they will forward it to their friends so they can have a good laugh.
A liberal will click to another website that won't tell them the truth.

Obama's Economic Report Card

Recently, the Obama Fan Club, also known as the mainstream media, proudly proclaimed that the Obama stimulus worked and that we have turned the corner. According to them, the unemployment rate is down and Obama has turned around the economy he inherited from Bush. Naturally, it’s always Bush’s fault.
However, a review of the latest statistics from the BLS reveal how off the above claims are.
In February 2009 the unemployment rate was 8.3%. The current unemployment rate is the same 8.3% despite spending $825 billion (the latest BLS figures) on stimulus that did not stimulate. What’s even more telling is what has happened to the number of long-term unemployed workers – those who have not been able to find any work in 27 months or more. The latest BLS figures for the long-term unemployed are that they now stand at 5.5 million, an increase of 83%.
Some other interesting statistics showing what has happened since Obama took office:

• Median annual household income has dropped by about 7% under Obama’s stewardship.

• The national debt has increased by 41% and now stands at $15.4 trillion.

• The civilian workforce has decreased by 126,000 unlike the increases that have happened when the economy recovers.



But you would never know this if you read the newspapers or watched NBC news. According to them everything is coming up roses.

Your front page headline article (Sun. Nov. 20), "The Signs of Global
Warming", touting the signs of man-made global warming, is totally
slanted toward the "environmental whacko" projection of fraudulent
man-made global warming.

A perfect example of this fraud can be illustrated by that global warming
guru, Al Gore, who proclaimed that due to the the melting of the polar
ice-caps, most all cities abutting the oceans, will be flooded out due
to the oceans reaching 20 ft. above the present sea levels.

So what does the pseudo-scientist, Al Gore do, he buys property along
the California coastline. Maybe he knows something we don't know or
that he won't tell us the truth?

That must be his "Inconvenient Truth" or is it a "Convenient Lie".
Let's have an article, in the future, by some reputable global warming
"deniers", of which there are thousands. The Sun-Sentinel always
tries to be fair and balanced, right?

U.S. Fears Tripoli May Deploy Gas As Chaos Mounts

WASHINGTON—The government of Col. Moammar Gadhafi hasn’t destroyed significant stockpiles of mustard gas and other chemical-weapons agents, raising fears in Washington about what could happen to them—and whether they may be used—as Libya slides further into chaos.

Tripoli also maintains control of aging Scud B missiles, U.S. officials said, as well as 1,000 metric tons of uranium yellowcake and vast amounts of conventional weapons that Col. Gadhafi has channeled in the past to militants operating in countries like Sudan and Chad.

So will these weapons of mass destruction ever be found? And, if not, will the Obama administration ever hear the end of it?

Current and former U.S. officials said in interviews that Washington’s counter-proliferation operations against Libya over the past decade have scored gains, in particular the dismantling of Tripoli’s nascent nuclear-weapons program and its Scud C missile stockpiles. But the level of instability in Libya, and Col. Gadhafi’s history of brutality, continues to make the U.S. focus on the arms and chemical agents that remain, they said.

"When you have a guy who’s as irrational as Gadhafi with some serious weapons at his disposal, it’s always a concern," said a U.S. official. "But we haven’t yet seen him move to use any kind of mustard gas or chemical weapon" during the unrest.

Yet. Still, the situation over there could be a helluva lot worse if it wasn’t for the invasion of Iraq and the subsequent disarming of Mr. Gadhafi by the Bush administration.

The George W. Bush administration reached a key agreement with Tripoli in 2003 that called for Libya to scrap its weapons of mass destruction programs in return for normalized diplomatic relations.

Within months of the pact, Col. Gadhafi’s government sent to the U.S. the critical infrastructure for its nuclear-weapons programs, including uranium hexafluoride stockpiles, centrifuge machines and parts for a nuclear fuel-conversion facility. Libya also destroyed its longer-range missiles and 3,300 aerial munitions used to disperse mustard gas and other chemical agents…

But the program to eradicate Libya’s chemical agents, as well as its chemical weapons production facility, was delayed by spats between Washington and Tripoli over funding and logistics, according to U.S. officials…

Libya was to have destroyed all 23 metric tons of its mustard gas by the end of last year, according to the [Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons], but 9.5 metric tons remain. The Hague-based body said Libya was granted an extension until May to destroy the rest.

Who granted him this extension? The Obama administration or the Hague?

Libya also possesses more than half of the 1,300 metric tons of precursor chemicals used for developing chemical agents. The material is believed to be stored in jugs at the former Rabta chemical-weapons facility…

"Had the destruction process not started, we would be facing a far more dangerous situation," said Paula DeSutter, who helped oversee disarmament issues in George W. Bush’s State Department. "On the other hand, one would certainly feel more secure if all of the mustard gas had been eliminated." …

Do you think the Bush administration will get any credit from Mr. Obama or the news media for having disarmed Col. Gadhafi even this much? Isn’t this one more dividend from the invasion of Iraq?

Just imagine if he still had the material for just one ‘dirty bomb’ and the means to deliver it?

An Entourage Surpassing the Queen's

President Obama showed up at the G-20 summit in London with everything but the proverbial kitchen sink-although he did bring the White House chef and the kitchen staff.

The heads of government in London for the G-20 summit are discussing serious and weighty issues, which in time will be duly reported on, but right now the British press is entranced by the sheer size of President Obama's traveling entourage. And no wonder.

Obama arrived with 500 staff in tow, including 200 Secret Service agents a team of six doctors, the White House chef and kitchen staff with the President's own food and water.

And, according to the Evening Standard, he also came with "35 vehicles in all, four speech writers and 12 teleprompters." For sure, our president is not going to be at a loss for words.

The press duly reported on Air Force One and all its bells and whistles but also on the presence of the presidential helicopter, Marine One, and a fleet of identical decoys to ferry him from Stansted airport to central London.

Among all those vehicles is the presidential limousine, which one local paper mistakenly called Cadillac One, but is universally referred to as the Beast. The limo, reinforced with ceramic and titanium armor, carries a tear gas cannon, night vision devices and its own oxygen and is resistant to chemical and radiation attack. It is, marveled one reporter, a sort of mobile panic room. The Guardian called it "the ultimate in heavily armored transport."

The president is entitled to all the security, communications and support he feels necessary to do his job but surely, when we're trying to project a more restrained, humble image to the world, the president's huge retinue could be scaled back to something less than the triumphal march from "Aida."

Just how does recklessly expanding America's debt to the point of near bankruptcy and raising taxes on the productive sector of the economy serve any useful purpose?

No wonder economist Arthur Laffer is predicting a double-dip recession. The recovery won't begin till Obama is out of office—and never let a liberal try to tell you otherwise.

How about further evidence that this was the presidential candidate who's spiritual advisor for 20 years, and the man who married he and his wife, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., is anti-semitic and claims that America supports terrorism, invited the 9/11 attack, invented the HIV virus as a means of genocide against African Americans, blames the Jews for the world's problems and seemingly enjoys the repeated rant of "God Damn America".

B. Hussein Obama is the president who was endorsed by Louis Farrakhan, the Nation of Islam, the New Black Panther Party and other anti-white and anti-semitic hate groups.

Is it anything less than a double standard and complete bigotry when Obama stereotypes with the phrase "typical white person", knowing that if Hillary Clinton, John McCain or any other non-African American recast the same phrase in the form of 'typical black person' they would themselves be cast a racist and their resignation demanded?

RUSH: Folks, there's a new book out, been brought to my attention. I just downloaded it, my iPad on I books. I'm gonna start reading it this afternoon. The book is entitled "Reckless Endangerment: How Outsized Ambition, Greed, and Corruption Led to Economic Armageddon," and it's by Gretchen Morgenson (who is an economics writer/business writer to the New York Times) and noted financial analyst Joshua Rosner. And this book apparently is a cover-to-cover indictment of Wall Street and the Democrat Party, Fannie Mae and subprime mortgages. This book answers the question that the American people have: Who is responsible for this debacle?

The American people know somebody really screwed up, but they don't know who. This book provides the answer and in names. One of the big names mentioned is a guy named James Johnson, a huge Democrat Party power broker, facilitator, fundraiser. Barney Frank's name is mentioned. ACORN. La Raza. The Democrat establishment with unbreakable ties to Wall Street. Angelo Mozilo. This book apparently makes it plain that this economic disaster is a pure creation of the Democrat Party and crony capitalist associates on Wall Street. Not the Republican Party. Pure and simple, the Democrat Party. Despite the fact that the lead author is one of the business writers for the New York Times, Gretchen Morgenson.

He says that the Republican Party and the Tea Party have just acquired a new weapon of mass destruction (it has nothing to do with Weiner), and that if the deploy the weapon effectively in the next election cycle -- and Mead says it's a big if -- then they've got the biggest opportunity to move the country rightward since Ronald Reagan took the oath of office in 1981. And it is this book, that this book answers the question average Americans have: "Why is what's happening to me happening? Why is my home worthless? Why don't I have a job? Why can't I get a loan? Why is this economy such a mess?"

This book answers it, and answers it with the names of Democrats on Wall Street in the Obama administration: Bill Clinton, Barney Frank, Henry Cisneros, Nancy Pelosi, ACORN, La Raza -- and the big villain: A guy by the name of James Johnson, long one of the most important members of the Democrat establishment. He ran Mondull's campaign with Beckel. He chaired the search of John Kerry (who, by the way, served in Vietnam) for a vice president. He's the guy that settled on the noted anti-poverty warrior, John Edwards. Obama was so impressed with this James Johnson fellow that he reportedly asked him to lead Obama's search in 2008 for a VP, though he withdrew.

Johnson withdrew when word got out that he benefited from the disgraced and disgusting Angelo Mozilo's corrupt program of special mortgages for political people. [Mead] says this story as a killer app for the Republicans. It demonizes Democrats, it lends itself to attack ads, it divides Democrats between their Wall Street and union bases, combines Republican hate figures in ways calculated to unify the Republicans and heighten the intensity of the faithful. "The story illustrates everything the Tea Party thinks about the corrupt Washington establishment and the evils of big government. It demonstrates the limits on the ability of government programs to help the poor. It converts a complicated economic story into a simple morality play -- with Dems as the villain. It allows Republicans to capitalize on public fury at the country’s economic problems. It links the Democrats to Wall Street -- the one part of the private sector that the Republican base loathes. It exposes that mix of incompetence and arrogance that is the hallmark of the modern American liberal establishment and links this condescending cluelessness to the real problems of real American families. It links President Obama (through appointments, associations and friendships) with the worst elements of the Clinton legacy and it blunts some key Democratic talking points."

The title of the book is "Reckless Endangerment: How Outsized Ambition, Greed, and Corruption Led to Economic Armageddon," and it's still happening. This little exercise here with Obama and coal is one little microcosm, one small little example. James Johnson, as I say, was an official of Fannie Mae -- and for compensation decisions made while he was a board member of United Health Care, one of the nation's biggest medical insurers. So I don't know if you ever heard the name James Johnson but he's one of these apparently huge, behind the scenes (not even so much behind the scenes), big-time Democrat Party power broker. But imagine a book that has the answers is that every American is asking: "Why in the world is this happening to our country?" The book has it in lay terms. You don't need a financial background to understand it, to decipher it -- and then the answers point straight to the Democrat Party and their liberal, crony capitalist buddies on Wall Street.

Time-out, another one. Fastest three hours in media. Speaking of books, Ann Coulter will be here in 45 minutes to discuss her new book, and it's a page-turner, too. It's about the "mob-ocracy" that is the left, the Democrat Party, and how mobs generally define Democrats today and serve as their prime mover.

Suppose It Is Bogus?

Obama's “birth certificate” is pretty far down on my list of things that is wrong with Obama, but since he decided (through prodding by Donald Trump) to present his “birth certificate” to the public for viewing, it is the duty of the public to determine whether or not it is the real McCoy.

At first glance, it looks legitimate and it seems to be filled out fully, but is what is contained the real information or is it bogus?

Well, let's take a close look at what is contained in that Certificate of Live Birth. First off, the document has a file number of 61-106041 and a registration date of August 8, 1961. The day after Obama was born, a set of twins were born on August 5, 1961 (the Nordyke twins). They had file numbers of 61-106037 and 61-106038. Their birth was registered on August 11, i961 (3 days after Obama's). Since the file numbers run consecutively, how come Obama's file number is greater than the Nordyke twins who were born the day after Obama and were registered 3 days after Obama? How could that be?

Another questionable notation on the “birth certificate” is the entry of where his father was born. It states that he was born in Kenya, East Africa, but there was no country called Kenya in 1961. The country now known as Kenya, got its independence in 1963 (two years after Obama was born). In 1961, the place where Obama Sr. was born was known as the British East Africa Protectorate not Kenya. How could that be?

Another entry on that “birth certificate” that does not jibe is the name of the hospital that he claims he was born in. On the purported “birth certificate”, it states that the name of the hospital was Kapi'olani Maternity and Gynecological Hospital, but there was no hospital by that name until 1978 when Kauikeolani Children's Hospital merged with the Kapi'olani Maternity Home and changed its name to Kapi'olani Maternity and Gynecological Hospital the name that appears on the real “birth certificate” presented by Obama. How could that be?

So instead of settling the matter of his birth once and for all and shutting up the “birthers”, it just muddied up the matter even more.

Are the people in charge of handling Obama's public relations and his personal affairs really incompetent and a throw back to the Keystone Kops or are they just arrogant about telling the truth?

A simple thing like a birth certificate, which most of us have, can, in the wrong hands, or by devious people, can cause multiple questions about the integrity of the person it's supposed to represent and who happens to be our president. If we can't trust him to give us a valid “birth certificate” can we trust him in the other things he has to tell us?

I'd like to see some courageous reporter or a news organization ask Obama or his senior staff if they would vouch for the “birth certificate” they presented to the public, and if they can't, why can't they?

Why I Take Obama's 'Common' Offenses Against Officers Personally

President Obama continues to use the White House as a platform to dishonor police officers.
On May 11, Obama and First Lady Michele welcomed a rap poet who celebrates cop killers to the White House. Lonnie Rashid Lynn, Jr., known professionally as "Common," performed a few days before thousands of police officers arrived in Washington for "National Police Week," the annual memorial to honor fallen officers.


Common's "A Song for Assata" is his ode to cop killer Joanne Deborah Chesimard, aka Assata Shakur, a former member of the Black Liberation Army, wanted by the FBI on several felony charges. On May 2, 1973, two New Jersey State Troopers stopped her car on the New Jersey Turnpike. Chesimard and her accomplice shot and killed Trooper Werner Foerster execution-style at point blank range, and wounded Trooper James Harper. Convicted in 1977, Chesimard escaped from prison in 1979 and was located in Cuba in 1984. Common named his daughter Omoye Assata Lynn.


Abu Mumia Jamal was a member of the Black Panthers until 1970. He was convicted and sentenced to death for the December 9, 1981 murder of Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner during a traffic stop. Jamal's death sentence is still on appeal. Common's rap, "God is Freedom," supports Jamal's release.


In "A Letter to the Law," Common tells "the law my Uzi weighs a ton ... I hold up a peace sign but I carry a gun." He concludes with his "burn a Bush" slur to then-President George W. Bush.


Obama's invitation to Common is part of a pattern. He used a White House press conference in 2009 to accuse officers of the Cambridge, Mass. Police Department of acting "stupidly" for arresting his friend, a black professor at Harvard, who refused to identify himself during a burglary investigation. Obama refused to apologize for his admittedly baseless accusation, and for slandering police officers as racists with "a long history in this country of African-Americans and Latinos being stopped by law enforcement disproportionately."


As the widow of a retired police officer, who has experienced the danger of a "traffic stop," I'm obliged to add my voice to the outrage expressed by many in the law enforcement family.


My husband Gene and I were driving with our four young daughters to a barbecue at the home of another police officer on a Saturday afternoon. An obviously drunk driver nearly hit our car as he swerved past us, while running other cars off the road. I knew that Gene wouldn't ignore him, so I wasn't surprised when he said, "I have to make him pull over before he causes an accident."


The driver stopped, but it was at a bar for another drink. We pulled in behind his car. A barrel-chested guy with a huge neck got out of the car and headed toward the bar. Gene confronted him with his badge, telling him that he was under arrest for suspicion of drunk driving, and to remain where he was. Gene told me to go inside and tell them to call the department: "Officer needs assistance."


My fear that this guy wouldn't go quietly was confirmed when I returned to find Gene struggling with him. Gene had been hospitalized a few days prior for a blood clot in his right arm, which prevented him from using it.


I was nearly eight months pregnant or I would have been on the guy's back. All I could do was comfort our girls who were watching a bad man trying to hurt their daddy. Law enforcement, like the military, is a family matter.


Too much time passed, making it obvious that the bartender hadn't made the call. I ran back inside and yelled at him to call the police or suffer the consequences.


I learned first-hand how thin the "Blue Line" can be.


Back outside, I saw Gene use one arm to spin the perp around and apply a "choke hold" around his huge neck. Police arrived as he slumped unconscious onto the grass. We weren't surprised to learn that he had numerous convictions for driving under the influence.


Our son was born about a month later. Two days later, Gene arrived to take us home. I knew as soon as he came into my hospital room that something was very wrong: "Vern Owings was killed last night." They had gone through the Long Beach, Calif. police academy together.


Vern and his partner had stopped to help what they thought were two men having car trouble. The driver, a felon on parole, shot Vern in the head as he approached the driver's side. Gene's sorrow was deepened by his feeling that it might not have happened if he'd been with Vern that night.


Vernon J. Owings is one of the thousands of fallen officers honored at the National Police Memorial. His inscription on the Memorial reads:


Officer Owings was shot and killed when he and his partner stopped to help what they thought were two men having car trouble on Seaside Boulevard. One of the men produced a handgun and shot and killed Officer Owings. Both men were apprehended.

The gunman was the leader of a gang responsible for 70 holdups that netted the gang more than one hundred thousand dollars. He was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to death on November 2, 1960. His sentence was later commuted to life.


Common and Obama have more in common than disrespect for law enforcement. There's the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama's pastor of 20 years who preached racist, anti-American, anti-government diatribes. Common began attending Wright's church at the age of eight. He defended Wright against critics of his inflammatory sermons. He "rapped" for Obama from Wright's pulpit on New Year's Eve 2008.


The last line of Common's rap "poem" at the White House honored Obama: "One King's Dream, he was able to Barack us." I'm guessing that Mrs. Obama wouldn't have felt honored if Common had performed his little ditty, "The Bitch in Yoo."


According to White House Press Secretary James Carney, President Obama appreciates the way Common tries to get children to focus on poetry, "as opposed to some of the negative influences of life on the street."


Apparently, regular folks like police officers aren't as enlightened as the Obamas. Here we thought that terrible grammar, diction and enunciation sated with obscenities, misogyny, and racism are "some of the negative consequences of life on the street" that we want children to avoid.


The day after Common's performance, Obama "welcomed" America's "Top Cops" from across the country to the White House. Obama's sop doesn't begin to cover his offenses.


I know of one top cop who would have declined the invitation.

General Eisenhower Warned Us

It is a matter of history that when the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, General Dwight Eisenhower, found the victims of the death camps, he then ordered all possible photographs to be taken, and for the German people from surrounding villages to be ushered through the camps and even made to bury the dead.

He did this because he said in words to this effect:

'Get it all on record now - get the films - get the witnesses - because somewhere down the road of history some bastard will get up and say that this never happened.'

Recently, the UK debated whether to remove The Holocaust from its school curriculum because it 'offends' the Muslim population which claims it never occurred. It is not removed as yet. However, this is a frightening portent of the fear that is gripping the world and how easily each country is giving into it.

It is now more than 60 years after the Second World War in Europe ended. This e-mail is being sent as a memorial chain, in memory of the 6 million Jews, 20 million Russians, 10 million Christians, and 1,900 Catholic priests who were "murdered, raped, burned, starved, beaten, tortured experimented on and humiliated" while the German people looked the other way.

Now, more than ever, with Iran, among others, claiming the Holocaust to be 'a myth,' it is imperative to make sure the world never forgets.

The “Dirty Little Secret Behind the Chevy Volt”…. The Chevy Volt MUST NOT be allowed to fail! The Rest of the Story. This is what happens when the Marxist Community Organizer and his Regime try to run (DESTROY) the marketplace.

Patrick Michaels is a senior fellow in Environmental Studies at the Cato Institute and the editor of the forthcoming Climate Coup: Global Warming’s Invasion of our Government and our Lives, as well as the author of several other books on global warming.

His Forbes column on the Chevy Volt is a case study in the nexus between big government corruption and big business rent-seeking.

Michaels briefly recaps the well-known consumer fraud in which GM has touted the Volt as an all-electric mass production vehicle on the supposed basis of which its sales receive a $7,500 taxpayer subsidy, which still renders it overpriced and unmarketable.

Michaels notes that “sales are anemic: 326 in December, 321 in January, and 281 in February.”

There seems to be a trend here.

Michaels adds that GM has announced a production run of 100,000 in the first two years and asks what appears to be a rhetorical question: “Who is going to buy all these cars?”

But wait! Keep hope alive! There is a positive answer to the question.

Jeffrey Immelt’s GE will buy a boatload of those uneconomic GM cars. Here the case study opens onto the inevitable political angle: Recently, President B. Hussein Obama selected General Electric CEO Jeffrey Immelt to chair his Economic Advisory Board.

GE is also awash in windmills waiting to be subsidized so they can provide unreliable, expensive power.

Consequently, and soon after his appointment, Immelt announced that GE will buy 50,000 Volts in the next two years, or half the total produced.

Assuming the corporation qualifies for the same tax credit, we (you and me) just shelled out $375,000,000 to a company to buy cars that no one else wants, so that GM will not tank and produce even more cars that no one wants. And this guy is the chair of Obama’s Economic Advisory Board?

But of course. Michaels includes this hilarious detail in his case study:

In a telling attempt to preserve battery power, the heater is exceedingly weak. Consumer Reports their tests averaged a paltry 25 miles of electric-only running, in part because it was testing in cold Connecticut. (The [GM] engineer at the Auto Show said cold weather would have little effect.) It will be interesting to see what the range is on a hot, traffic-jammed summer day, when the air conditioner will really tax the batteries. When the gas engine came on, Consumer Reports got about 30 miles to the gallon of premium fuel; which, in terms of additional cost of high-test gas, drives the effective mileage closer to 27 mpg. A conventional Honda Accord, which seats 5 (instead of the Volt’s 4), gets 34 mpg on the highway, and costs less than half of what CR paid, even with the tax break.

The story of the GM Volt deserves a place in the Harvard Business School curriculum….but of course, it won’t. It’s a classic tale of the GOVERNMENT deciding what the public needs, not the marketplace.
